Хотя действие разворачивается в очень сжатый промежуток времени, фильм избегает густого и прямолинейного повествования и строится как хроника; он опирается на последовательность ударных эпизодов, весьма несхожих по интонации, ставящих акцент то на персонаже, то на ситуации или каком-либо аспекте жизни и традиций кавалерии. Такое драматургическое построение – характерная отличительная черта Форда; она будет прослеживаться и усиливаться до самых последних его фильмов.С этой картины Форд начинает размышлять в своем творчестве о старости и уходе на покой – болезненном периоде для мужчины, поскольку его может ожидать участь праздного и, главное бесполезного человека. Эта ситуация во вселенной Форда представляет собой самое грозное испытание. Страх оказаться бесполезным рождает по контрасту тоску по прошедшим годам полноценной жизни и некоторую ностальгию. От начала до конца фильма чувствуется желание Форда не поддаться искушению отчаяния. Так он изобретает двойной финальный пируэт (атака и бегство лошадей; возвращение бывшего капитана на службу), чтобы позволить своему герою, несмотря ни на что, закончить жизнь красиво.Фильм также примечателен смелостью выбранного Фордом цветового решения.
